I’ve heard knee replacement is considered a very successful surgery. If that’s the case, why is a knee specific for women necessary?

Knee replacement has been a highly successful surgery for more than 30 years, and 9 out of 10 patients who undergo the procedure report improved pain relief, knee function, and overall health-related quality of life, according to the National Institutes of Health (NIH). But medicine is continually evolving and improving.

The number of knee replacements has increased over the years, and today, two thirds of the 400,000 knee replacement patients annually are women. A new implant was needed to address shape differences between women’s and men’s knees.

The Zimmer Gender Solutions Knee was specifically designed to alleviate joint pain and to optimally fit the shape and size of women’s knees, thereby resulting in better fit, higher flexion, and more natural movement.

Knee implants have long been available in many sizes from multiple manufacturers, but every single one of these implants was based on an average between the size of men’s and women’s knees—a configuration that does not resolve anatomical differences.

Wouldn’t a smaller-sized implant be sufficient?

Replacement knees have long been available in many sizes, but size alone is not the only difference between women’s and men’s knees. A replacement knee made to optimally fit women must accommodate the significant differences in shape as well as size.  The Zimmer Gender Solutions Knee is designed to do just that.

Other orthopaedic companies say they have knees for women, too. Is the Zimmer Gender Solutions Knee really much different from currently available knee implants?

Definitely. While some companies offer knee implants in various sizes, the difference between women’s and men’s knees is not just about size, but about shape. The Zimmer Gender Solutions Knee is the first and only knee implant shaped to optimally fit women. It is the only knee based on three distinct and scientifically documented shape differences between women’s and men’s knees. No other knee offers all three of these features.

Should I be concerned that the Zimmer Gender Solutions Knee is new?

The Zimmer Gender Solutions Knee offers the best of both worlds: it’s based on the Zimmer NexGen® Knee, an implant that has a 10-year proven track record of success, but with changes in shape that women can call their own.
