With more women undergoing knee replacement surgery, orthopaedic surgeons began to notice the distinct anatomical differences between women’s and men’s knees. The orthopaedic surgeons’ experiences and ground-breaking scientific research made it clear that it was time women had their own knee replacement. So, many companies began making knee replacements in smaller sizes. The different sizes, however, did not account for the anatomical differences in shape. Zimmer understood that meeting the knee replacement needs of women is about shape and size.

The Zimmer Gender Solutions Knee is the first and only knee replacement shaped to fit a woman’s anatomy. The design is based on pioneering research that confirmed the differences between women’s and men’s knees that surgeons were seeing in the operating room. The Zimmer Gender Knee is shaped to fit a woman and has 3 distinct differences.

There are a number of companies who claim that their knee replacement systems are either designed for, or accommodate the specific needs of the female anatomy. The following table compares knee replacements from various companies and shows how only the Zimmer^® Gender Solutions™ Knee Implant is truly designed for the features common in women's knees.

Zimmer collected and analyzed computer tomography scans on more than 800 femurs and patellas from both female and male knees.¹  The results of this research led to the design of the Zimmer Gender Solutions Knee, incorporating distinctive features that address the anatomical characteristics typical of the female knee. Implant designs that distinguish between female and male anatomical differences allow for improved implant fit and fewer intraoperative adjustments.

Note: The other systems listed may have smaller sizes, but all of these are baed on an average of female and male anatomies combined.
